Example 2:          Solve:  x(x – 2) = 2

Solution:               

First expand the left side, then subtract 2 from both sides to get  x² – 2x – 2 = 0.

This is the same as 1x² – 2x – 2 = 0, so a = 1, b = –2, and c = –2.  Plug these values in the quadratic formula:
